There are some really great Christmas-y events happening this weekend right here in Grant County! We at the Fortress feel so blessed to be a part of a community that is so intentional about having fun things to do every single weekend. You’ll never be bored in Grant County- if you know where to go! Check out some fun events we think should make it in your busy calendar this weekend.
Christmas City Walkway of Lights: this event only costs $5 and is a staple for Grant County Residents. It’s been going on for a while now and will continue through New Years Eve, but we think this weekend with the gorgeous snow is the perfect timing! Head over to the Marion Riverwalk to see one of the biggest light displays in Indiana. You can choose to drive through or walk through, although walking through tends to make it a longer experience (so think about whether your kids will have the patience level to enjoy the entire event!) If so, walking through is our personal favorite. The walk/drive is under 3 miles, so for older kids it won’t be a problem to walk; in less than 3 miles you will see 2.5 MILLION lights! Gorgeous! 200,000 people come out every year to experience this Christmas tradition. It is open every night from now through New Years Eve from 6pm-10pm. They also supply hot chocolate, apple cider, and other Christmas goodies if you like to crack open the sweet side of you during the holidays.
Gas City Christmas in the Park: if you’re looking for a free but still fun light display, check out this one! Again going on now through New Years Eve, this weekend is ideal with the snow to see the lights all around. Check out Beaner Linn Park from 4pm-9pm available every night to see a beautiful display! This is a drive through event, so bundle up, make some hot chocolate to go, and head on out.
Discover Earth Exhibit: a free event for the kiddos to experience something new, and a break from all the “Christmas stuff”? We’ll take it! This event is actually going on all the way through to March, but if you’re not in the mood to do anything Christmas themed, this would be the perfect break. At Marion Public Library 9am-5pm every day, you can learn about nature with fun, interactive activities. This event is a great educational experience as well as a memory!
Taylor University Men’s Basketball Game: Friday and Saturday, the Taylor University Basketball Guys will be playing at Taylor from 7pm-9pm both nights. They are trying to defeat Cincinnati Christian University. Should be a good couple of games! A way to stay out of the cold and get some of that sports tank filled.
Taylor University Commencement: the graduates this semester from Taylor University will be all dressed up this Saturday and ready to move that tassel! Check this event out happening over at Taylor if you have any friends or family you know to be graduating.
Marion Open Air Holiday Market: as happens every Saturday this time of year, the Marion Open Air Holiday Market will be going on from 9am-4pm. Head over to the Tree of Life bookstore on the bypass for this incredible Christmas bazaar featuring all local vendors! There will be jewelry, home decor, wood crafts, pottery, and kids’ clothes. You can also pick up various holiday treats for any parties you have coming up (or just for yourself. We’re not judging). Shop for those you haven’t gotten any gifts for this year, or buy a few favorites for yourself! After all the stress of shopping for others, sometimes it’s nice to set a small budget for yourself and just go for it.
Dinner with Dickens: how fun! From 6pm-8pm this Saturday, take advantage of this event at Historic Hostess House. This is such a different Christmas event, something new and fresh. Charles Dickens, the famous author, is the center around which this event revolves. “Mr. Dickens” will be the host of a traditional Christmas dinner, with foods and drinks from long ago! Food and music will be abundant. *This event will serve alcohol as well.*
Broadway on the Big Screen: Saturday from 7:30pm-10:30pm, hop over to the James Dean Memorial Theatre to see Kelsey Grammar as Ebenezer Scrooge for the world premiere of the TV adaptation of “A Christmas Carol” musical. Lots of Charles Dickens going on this weekend!
Indiana Wesleyan University Commencement: Saturday, join Indiana Wesleyan graduates as they walk the stage and claim their degree! If you have friends, family, or even staff members at Indiana Wesleyan, this will be a fantastic event.
Rogue One: this new Star Wars Story will be coming out this weekend! Make sure to secure a seat for you and your family. We have a feeling it will be an instant classic!
Moana: the newest Disney princess is from the South Pacific Islands, a whole new kind of princess that Disney has never created before! She believes in girl power and friendship. This fun story is bound to brighten up any dreary day! Check it out this weekend!
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: although this movie is a spinoff of the Harry Potter series and features magic, older kids who are mature enough will enjoy this funny spin on the American Wizarding World- set in the 1920’s! Playing this weekend in local theaters.
Trolls: this fun kids movie is nothing but a big laugh for you and the family! Kids from 2 to 62 will enjoy what this movie has to offer. The trolls will be up to no good this weekend on the big screen.
Lastly, a quick PSA: this time of year, many of our DJs go home to be with parents and family. Wally will still be on air from 6am-10am every morning, and 20 the Countdown will still happen on Saturdays, but we will be having music only until January! Enjoy all the non-stop Christmas music and we can’t wait to see you in 2017.
