Over the next few weeks, Fortress staff members will be giving you a look into what they do at the station on a day-to-day basis. First up, it’s general manager Tim Tedeschi.
What exactly does a general manager do? Great question! As general manager, my job is to make sure everything is running smoothly in all aspects of the station. I’m responsible for scheduling all jocks’ shifts, which makes for a hectic start to every semester. At other radio stations, my job might be described as a Program Director. I’m also pretty sure I deal with more paperwork than anyone else on staff: on-air schedules, sign-up sheets for community events, etc. And I get to be on air 2 hours a week, which even after 2 years is pretty cool to me.
I’m an extrovert, plain and simple. I don’t think I would last in a job that didn’t have much human interaction for very long. So while the paperwork is necessary and helpful to keep things organized, I much prefer working and talking with our staff members and jocks. The rest of the staff and jocks technically report to me, but I don’t really like seeing myself as a “boss.” I believe I do my job best when I’m available to help people do their jobs to the best of their ability rather than just giving orders.
So there’s a little bit about what I do here at The Fortress. Stay tuned in the next few weeks for blogs from the rest of our staff!
